Drywood Termites in Palmetto — Find the Colony, Treat the Wood, Refer the Tent Jobs

Palmetto Exterminator treats drywood termites in Palmetto’s older houses. The most exposed wood sits in the old homes near downtown and the Manatee River and in the coastal stock out west on Terra Ceia and Snead Island, where humid, salty air keeps framing and trim inviting year after year. Drywood colonies need no soil contact: they chew galleries inside a sill, a jamb or a rafter and stay out of sight until pellets start collecting below.

The newer subdivisions north and east along US 301 are concrete block on a slab. Subterranean termites are the larger worry in those homes, and that is a different treatment.

Here is what a visit covers: we inspect, confirm which termite you have, recommend a path and carry out any spot treatment ourselves. If the house needs a tent, we say so and refer you to a licensed fumigation company. The inspection is free. Call (941) 213-5203.

Pellets, Shavings or Dust?

Several pests get blamed for drywood damage in Palmetto. Each leaves a different calling card:

  • Drywood termites push hard, six-sided pellets out of small kick-out holes. The pellets look like coarse sand or ground pepper and gather in the same spot again and again: under a windowsill, along a baseboard, on the attic floor.
  • Subterranean termites come up from the ground inside thin mud tubes on foundation walls, slab edges and piers. They need soil contact, and their treatment is a soil treatment or bait stations, never a tent.
  • Carpenter ants tunnel through damp wood and push out rough shavings mixed with bits of dead insects. The ants themselves are usually easy to spot.
  • Powderpost beetles leave small round exit holes and a fine dust like flour. A WDO inspection reports them too, but the fix is different.

Keep a spoonful of whatever you swept up in a sealed bag, or take a sharp photo. We name the pest before we name a treatment.

Spot Treatment or a Tent

Spot treatment, done by Palmetto Exterminator. This fits when the activity stays inside wood we can get to: a window or door frame, a length of trim, a floor joist, a piece of furniture. We drill into the galleries and inject a labeled termiticide foam or an orange-oil product. Bare, unfinished wood can take a borate on top of that. You stay in the house, and the price is far below a fumigation. The limit is simple: it reaches only the colonies we locate, so the surrounding wood and the attic get checked before we promise a spot job.

Whole-structure fumigation, referred out. When pellets show up in several rooms, in the attic, or behind finished walls nobody can open, a tent is usually the right call. Palmetto Exterminator does not fumigate. We refer the job to a licensed fumigation company, explain what we found, and let you weigh their recommendation against ours.

Pellets on a sill are a late sign. By the time a pile is big enough to notice, the colony has usually been feeding for a while, and it may have company elsewhere in the house. That is why a spot treatment starts with a look at the wood around it.

If the House Gets Tented

The fumigation company runs the job and hands you its own prep list and schedule. The outline is the same from one job to the next:

  • Before. Everyone moves out for the duration, pets and live plants included. Food and medicine leave the house or go into the sealed bags the fumigator supplies.
  • During. Tarps go over the whole house, and a gas fumigant fills it until it has reached every piece of wood.
  • After. The tarps come down, the house airs out, and the crew tests the air. Nobody goes back in until the readings clear.

A fumigation leaves nothing in the wood afterward, so new swarmers can move in later. A borate on bare attic framing and other exposed wood gives that wood some protection, and we quote it on its own.

Selling the House?

When a WDO inspection on a Palmetto home turns up drywood termites, the buyer’s lender or the title company usually asks for proof of treatment. For work Palmetto Exterminator does, the record lists the species, the areas treated, the product and the date, and we can send it to the title company and both agents. A fumigated house gets its paperwork from the fumigation company. If you need the inspection itself, we perform Florida WDO inspections on the state’s Form 13645.

Pricing

Spot treatment is quoted after the inspection. The figure depends on how many areas need treating and how hard they are to reach. A fumigation is priced by the fumigation company, usually on the cubic volume of the house, and it costs considerably more. The inspection is free, and you leave it knowing which path fits your house.

Questions We Hear Every Day

Quick answers from our SWFL pest pros.

Is it drywood or subterranean? How can I tell?

Check what they leave behind. Drywood termites stay inside the wood and kick out hard, six-sided pellets about the size of coarse sand, and the pellets pile up below sills, baseboards, trim and attic framing. Subterranean termites nest in the soil and climb foundation walls, slab edges and piers inside thin mud tubes. The two treatments have nothing in common, so the inspection settles which one you have before we recommend a thing.

Which parts of Palmetto see the most drywood termites?

The older homes near downtown and the Manatee River, many of them wood-framed, and the coastal stock on Terra Ceia and Snead Island, where humid, salty air keeps the wood inviting. Drywood termites live entirely inside dry wood and never touch the soil. The newer subdivisions north and east along US 301 are concrete block on a slab, and subterranean termites are the bigger concern there.

Can you treat the termites without tenting the house?

Often. When the activity is limited to wood we can reach, such as a window frame, a door jamb, a run of trim, a joist or a piece of furniture, we drill into the galleries and inject a labeled termiticide foam or an orange-oil product, and bare, unfinished wood can get a borate. A spot treatment reaches only the colonies we find, so we check the wood around it and the attic first. If hidden colonies are a real possibility, you will hear it from us.

Does Palmetto Exterminator fumigate?

No. When the inspection shows drywood activity through much of the structure, or somewhere no one can reach, whole-structure fumigation is usually the right answer, and we refer you to a licensed fumigation company. We go over what we found with you so you can set their recommendation beside ours.

What happens when a house is fumigated?

The fumigation company tarps the house, releases a gas fumigant that reaches every piece of wood, then pulls the tarps and airs the house out. People and pets stay away the whole time, live plants come out, and food and medicine are removed or sealed in special bags. Nobody re-enters until the air tests clear. The fumigation company gives you its own prep list and schedule.

Will a fumigation keep them from coming back?

No. It kills the termites in the house on the day, but nothing is left behind to stop new swarmers from settling in later. A borate on bare attic framing and other exposed wood afterward protects that wood, and we quote it separately.

How is drywood treatment priced?

Spot treatment is priced after the inspection, by how many areas need treatment and how hard they are to reach, and it usually runs far below a fumigation. The fumigation company sets the price of a fumigation, usually by the cubic volume of the house, so that number comes from them. Our inspection is free.

Can you supply a WDO report for a sale?

Yes. Palmetto Exterminator performs Florida WDO inspections on the state's Form 13645. When we treat a house, we record the species, the areas treated, the product and the date, which is what the lender and title company ask for. A fumigated house is documented by the fumigation company that did the work.

Sweeping Up the Same Pellets Every Week?

Call (941) 213-5203 and book a free inspection. You get a plain answer: a spot treatment we do ourselves, or a referral to a fumigation company when the whole house needs it.
